2022 SUMMER YOUTH CAMP PROGRAM WRAPS UP!

Picture
[August 11, 2022]  Another successful summer camp program wrapped up at Camp Mokulē'ia, leaving lots of happy memories in its wake. The program officially kicked off on Trinity Sunday, and concluded with a Day Camp at Holy Apostles Church in Hilo.  Further below are pictures from all the camps in this year's summer program.
Our residential summer camp program was transformational! Our counselors guided campers in building their camp 'ohana through fun field games, team building exercises, kayaking, ziplining, conquering the challenge course, swimming, and even silly activities like nalgene face, wacky water wednesday, and campfires.  Campers formed friendships within their cabins and age groups as well as the whole camp!

With the help of our amazing chaplains, we were able to learn about The Way of Love and how with the Spirit of Aloha we can turn towards God, learn His ways, talk with Him through prayer, bless others, and go back home full of love and a sense of community.

The chaplains at each camp are an integral part of the team who, along with staff members, ensure that the children and youth experience camp fully in body, mind and spirit. This year's camp chaplains from the Diocese included the Rev. Mark Haworth (Halau Wa'a), the Rev. Charles Browning (St. Mary's), and the Rev. Jenn Latham (Holy Nativity).  Accompanying spouses were also active in participating and caring for all the campers.
The following is an excerpt from an article by the Rev. Jenn Latham, that appeared in the Holy Nativity weekly e-news:

"This week I am the middle school camp chaplain here and we have been having a fantastic time on the North Shore. Every day is filled with songs, fun activities on the water and land, food, rest, and prayers. Iʻve met a lot of wonderful campers and counselors who are making the most of their week at camp.

The overarching theme of camp is The Way of Love, and each day we have a daily theme that we, as chaplains, encourage the campers to ponder during the day. Each morning and night we have chapel time to talk about the theme, sing songs, and worship God.

Every day I see campers taking good care of one another, serving food at lunch, cleaning up after the meal, helping each other on the waterfront and ropes course. The camp staff are helping to form our children into loving beings who follow The Way of Love.

2022 SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM KICKS OFF ON TRINITY SUNDAY

Picture
[June 23, 2022]  Summer has officially begun, and Camp Mokulē'ia's  2022 summer camp program kicked off on Trinity Sunday, June 12. Since 2015, the Diocese of Hawai'i has designated Trinity Sunday for special collections to support Camp Mokulē'ia and its ministries.  This year, with COVID restrictions relaxed, Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick led a Trinity Sunday service (pictured above) held oceanside at the Camp.  He was joined by Canon Heather Patton-Graham and Father Mark Haworth, Camp Chaplain. Haworth brought the Hālau Wa'a Episcopal musicians and over 30 of their members for a lively Sunday worship service.
It was a picture-perfect day that included the commissioning of the 2022 camp staff, followed by a brunch.

Trinity Sunday also marked the beginning of the first of four on-site summer camps that was held June 12-17, for three age groups: Elementary, Middle School, and Senior High.

Returning Camp Chaplain Fr. Mark Haworth, started off each day with a morning gathering of reading scripture and to talk about the day’s theme.

The daily themes were part of curriculum put together by Camp Mokulē'ia Board President, Canon Heather Patton-Graham, based on Presiding Bishop Curry’s practice on The Way of Love.

Fr. Hau'oli Tomoso from Maui provided the ʻōlelo Hawai'i translation of Bishop Curry’s practices on The Way of Love. (Click on the image to view a larger version.)

Part of the chaplain’s duties throughout camp week was participating in the Praise Band for the morning and evening gatherings which consisted of roof-raising songs! Campers' favorites included earworms entitled “My Lighthouse” and “The Mango Song.”

I served as a first time volunteer for camp this year, helping out with leading evening Talk Story for the middle schoolers.

Seeing The Way of Love in the daily practice of campers in this thin space we know as Camp Mokulē'ia, was “loving, liberating and life-giving” inspirational! -- Jill Haworth

Fr. Mark also provided a talk story with high schoolers for contemplative time and prayer to end every evening, and the closing evening compline service for the entire camp.
This year's summer camp staff includes 12 Counselors and 2 CITs (Counselor-in-Training), who completed 10 days of intense training.  All were certified in First-Aid and CPR and about half completed their lifeguard certification.

In progress now is the second camp for Elementary and Middle School that will run through June 24.  Spots are still available for the remaining two camps in July. For more information and to register, click HERE.  Also available are Family Camps, Stay Cays, and a Day Camp on Hawai'i Island. Click HERE for more information.

Be sure to check back on this page where photos of all the camps will be posted as they are made available.
