CONFIRMATIONS & BLESSINGS AT CHRIST MEMORIAL

[Chronicle, December 8, 2020]  After 8 long months of being "grounded" on O'ahu, Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick flew to Kaua'i on Sunday, November 15, 2020, for confirmations and blessings at Christ Memorial Episcopal Church in Kilauea. After taking the 72-hour pre-test and following all safety protocols, the Bishop arrived at the quaint north shore church ready for a busy morning.

The 8:00 & 9:30 AM services had concluded, and to keep numbers down for social distancing purposes, a special Service of Confirmation was scheduled at 11:00 AM.  The Bishop confirmed Branch Lotspeich, Melody MacKenzie Lotspeich, Matthew Miller (whose reflection is shared further below), and Bill Schilling. He also reaffirmed Rebecca Hullum.
Following the service, everyone headed outdoors where the Bishop blessed five newly installed granite benches, each a memorial to loved ones. Family members shared a story at each bench, some tearful, most joyful, and were then blessed by the Bishop.

After the benches were blessed, they headed over to the church’s labyrinth that was constructed by members last summer so it could also be blessed.

Although there wouldn't be the usual celebratory reception with lots of hugs, food and fellowship, the event was no less joyous for those confirmed and those memorializing loved ones.

A Reflection by Matthew Miller...

The Confirmation, which the skeptical part of me kept dismissing as meaningless ritual up until it actually began, was in fact deeply meaningful for me.  I couldn't sing the Spirit Song afterwards because I was crying. I had broken through a very old wall in my character at last.  A whole lot of things came to an end in the week beforehand -- all now to be started up anew. Several very beautiful conversations with Jesus and Mary.  I feel so grateful for all of the people around me, in bodies and out of bodies. Just fumbling my way forwards, but my Guides are true. Pastor Gae made me strong enough to continue. This I will never forget.
