We wheel-barrowed the pavers and placed them onto the Labyrinth path to ensure we had the right number with a few to spare. Using a rototiller and shovels, we dug a 400 foot-long trench along the Labyrinth lines. We then wheel-barrowed and shoveled 4 tons of gravel and another 4 tons of sand into the trenches as a base for the pavers, manually tamping each layer.
Finally, we individually placed the 600 pavers into the trenches, meticulously set them at the appropriate depth, and backfilled with dirt that had been hand sifted, free of grass. All of this work took place over the span of a little more than a week! How did we accomplish this Herculean effort? With the help of many hands, working together with a shared spirit within us. Special thanks to Bob Vlach, Labyrinth Architect, who designed and painted our Labyrinth. He also man-handled the rototiller to cut most of the trenches. The next steps will be to place our donors' engraved stone plaques within the Labyrinth and to build a brick walkway to the church patio. |
