On Saturday, February 29, 2020, the Diocese welcomed its newest priest, the Rev. Andrew Arakawa, who was ordained to the Presbyterate by Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick in St. Albanʻs Chapel, 'Iolani School, Honolulu.
There was a large crowd of family, friends and clergy, including a group from his host church, Holy Apostles in Hilo, who flew in to witness this very special event. Andrew's son Liam served as an acolyte along with students that he has come to know while serving as an Assistant Upper School Chaplain at 'Iolani. Dr. Lisa Kimball, Associate Dean of Lifelong Learning and Professor of Lifelong Christian Formation at VTS where Andrew attended Seminary, delivered the homily. His wife Kim was filled with emotion as she placed the stole around his neck, and helped with his chasuble. Following the service, family and friends lined up to congratulate the new priest, with many taking a knee to be blessed. Of course, as in any special event here in the Islands, lei of every color and fragrance were piled high! A reception followed with a lavish feast, and the air was filled with sounds of laughter and cheer. Father Andrew will continue on at 'Iolani School, and also at St. Mark's Episcopal Church as Curate. |
