2019 SUMMER CAMPS IN THE DIOCESE

[August 15, 2019]  Kids are back in school and hitting the books, but some in the Diocese will still be hanging on to the unforgettable memories made at summer youth camp.

Camp Mokule'ia's 2019 summer program kicked off in June, and included four weeks of camp (three on O'ahu, one on the Big Island, and a one-week day camp at the Cathedral of St. Andrew). The camps were open to all youth as young as first grade and up through high school.  This year's total count of happy summer campers hit 117.

Darrell Whitaker, the Camp's Executive Director, said that the number of participants tripled compared to 2018, and of the 117 campers, 50 were from 16 different Episcopal churches. Photos shared on the camp's Facebook page and Instagram, revealed campers with big smiles enjoying the beach, playing basketball, getting crazy (and messy) with fun games, expanding their creativity with crafts, exploring nearby sites, tackling the ropes course, chilling out by a campfire, and just enjoying each other!

The staffers at Camp Mokule'ia were joined by summer camp counselors (pictured at top kicking up their heels and in the slideshow below) who came from every corner of the country, bringing their energy and unique brand of local culture. They made sure to keep their young participants laughing, engaged, and active in a variety of activities.  Our own Angela Cainguitan from Good Shepherd on Maui was one of the camp counselors.  She is currently attending college on O'ahu, and serves as a voice for the youth on Diocesan Council.

Others from the Diocese that volunteered their time at camp serving as chaplains were the Rev. Daniel Leatherman (St. Timothy's, Aiea), the Rev. Katlin McAllister (Holy Apostles, Hilo), the Rev. Jazzy Bostock (The Cathedral of St. Andrew) and Canon Jenny Wallace.

Included in this article are reflections on the Big Island Camp and Day Camp at The Cathedral, and also a few photos from a special day camp with our retired clergy at the bottom of the page!
"A'ole pau ka 'ike i ka halau hookahi"
This Hawaiian proverb translates to
"Not all knowledge is learnt from one school/place!"   This summer was amazing in that we were able to grow our numbers while also learning to grow ourselves as a camp and as youth leaders. There really isn't enough words to describe how we were able to experience God in so many different ways, however I am sure that the pictures will suffice!" -- Seini Lino, Program Director, Camp Mokule'ia

Meet the Camp's Summer Counselors!
Wonderful memories in photos:

Summer Camp on the Big Island

For the first time, staff from Camp Mokule'ia held a summer camp on the Big Island that took place at the Makapala Retreat Center in Kapa'au.  The camp was held June 16-20, for children in grades 2 through 8.  The Rev. Katlin McAllister from Holy Apostles in Hilo served as Chaplain and shares the following reflection:
"I was really moved and inspired by the commitment of the summer staff.  It was a very small gathering of campers but the staff gave their whole hearts and immense energy toward the campers' experience.  My favorite memory with the campers was when we held a blessing ritual and blessed each other with sanctified water using ti leaf. We shared in prayer, kindness, and lots of silliness at camp, and I was reminded just how big, delightful and expansive God's love can be." -- The Rev. Katlin McAllister (Holy Apostles, Hilo and Camp Chaplain)

Day Camp at The Cathedral of St. Andrew

The Cathedral of St. Andrew hosted a week long day camp, June 17-21, put together by staff from Camp Mokule'ia and Camp Kanuga in North Carolina.  The Rev. Cn. Moki Hino shared the following, and also expressed how wonderful it was to have children enjoying themselves throughout the Cathedral campus.
"Several months ago, Darrell Whitaker from Camp Mokule'ia reached out to the Cathedral of St. Andrew and expressed a desire to offer a summer program for children who lived in urban Honolulu so that they wouldn’t have to travel all the way to the North Shore every day to attend the Camp’s offering there. Recognizing that the Cathedral‘s mission is to serve the wider Diocese, leadership readily agreed to provide space for this urban program, and was delighted not only to have children on the premises –- under the tent, in the Von Holt Room, in the Parke Chapel, and on the great lawn -– but also the youth workers who traveled from Kanuga, North Carolina, to be with the children. The Cathedral looks forward to continuing this kind of collaboration with the Camp and is excited about future collaborations that may be on the horizon." -- The Rev. Cn. Moki Hino, The Cathedral of St. Andrew, Honolulu

Retired Clergy Day Camp

Picture
On Tuesday, August 13, 2019, the retired clergy group along with spouses and widows, were invited to spend a day out at Camp Mokule'ia.  Vans were arranged to bring them to the camp where they spent time relaxing, enjoying the beach, and also taking a tour with Executive Director, Darrell Whitaker.  They enjoyed a delicious lunch and fellowship before heading home.

Many thanks to the Rev. Frank Chun and his wife Norma, who do a marvelous job of keeping our retired clergy, their spouses and widows, connected, active and informed.
