2026 Annual Clergy Conference: Transitioning Into the Future

[September 24, 2026]  The diocese's annual Clergy Conference took place on Kaua'i, August 24-26, 2026, at the Kaua'i Outrigger Beach Resort in Lihue. Forty clergy were in attendance for Bishop Bob Fitzpatrick's final clergy conference as Bishop Diocesan. The guest speaker was the Rev. Rachel Taber-Hamilton, who took part in the speaker series during last year's HULI project, a collaboration of three diocesan ministries.
This year's conference theme, "Tradition, Transition, and Transfiguration: Living into a Time of Leadership Transition as a Communal and Spiritual Rite of Passage," was a markedly different subject matter, directed to a specific audience – clergy!

With the diocese currently in a period of change and transition, Taber-Hamilton's objective was to provide an opportunity for clergy to explore past leadership, identify the challenges, hopes, and needs that currently exist in the diocese, and how "clergy, community, and new leadership will work together towards fulfilling the creative promise of the future of the diocese."

The first session began after lunch on Monday, which was followed by a Eucharist Service and dinner at St. Michael's and All Angels, just a few miles away from the hotel. The Rev. Andrew McMullen, Rector of St. Michael's, hosted a lovely service while church members provided dinner, served up with lots of aloha. For several clergy, the evening was memorable.

"I loved how someone in the crowd just automatically started singing when we stood in line for communion," said the Rev. Moki Hino, "and it showed that the Spirit is alive and well in our Diocese."
The Rev. Keleawe Hee was also moved. "The Eucharist at St. Michael's was beautiful and I got all choked up just being together and singing," said Hee. "The dinner was beyond generous and served by such a great group of members!"

For the Rev. Canon Frank Chun, one particular request by Bishop Bob was a reminder of just how "senior" he was.

"The Bishop ended his homily asking those present to line-up according to diaconal dates," said Chun. "As the senior clergy present (1968) I led at the altar steps. Next was Alison Dingley (1978), then Heather Mueller (1979), Karen Swanson (1983), and then Bob (1986)."  Chun added, "there were other senior clergy who would've stood in between, but they didn't attend the Eucharist."
Tuesday began with breakfast and an early morning session. The afternoon and evening were left open for folks to enjoy the island and dinner on their own.  The third and final session took place Wednesday morning, with the conference ending shortly after lunch.
"It was eye-opening to hear what others had to say about the state of our Diocese.  Bishop-Elect Libby will be in my prayers daily as she faces new and interesting challenges." ~ The Rev. Moki Hino

Rachel was very organized with her talk and the activities we did in regards to the bishop's transition. The post-it activities were especially effective to give everyone a voice." ~ The Rev. Keleawe Hee

The Rev. David Gierlach shared this photo he took of the sunrise.  "This beautiful gift was on Tuesday morning in front of the hotel," said Gierlach.

"The Outrigger Beach Hotel on Kaua'i was absolutely perfect! The location, the amenities, the food, the room, and the service was top notch!" ~ The Rev. Keleawe Hee

Closing thoughts from the guest speaker, the Rev. Rachel Taber-Hamilton:

I would share that my experience was very positive. Clergy responded to the opportunities to share honestly and authentically about past experiences, diocesan strengths and needs for improvement and growth in the areas of communication, building relationships, and creating additional opportunities for mutual support and lay leadership development. The clergy expressed a genuine desire and commitment for healthy and mutually supportive relationships with the incoming bishop and see the transition as an overall opportunity for positive, adaptive, and creative changes in the life of the diocese.

Bishop-Elect Libby Berman shared her commitment to the clergy and diocese for working alongside all of you as you enter into future together as collaborators in the renewed mission of the diocese, each taking responsibility for realizing your shared collective vision for the diocese.

"It was nice to be on Kaua’i and good to see and spend time with colleagues, especially at breakfast at the hotel restaurant. I look forward to seeing everyone again at the Annual Meeting in Honolulu in October." ~ The Rev. Moki Hino
